Brodmann loudspeakers not only sound "near to the original sound", they sound "true to life“. Each Brodmann loudspeaker model, from the smallest to the largest, gives a reproduction in a "one to one" quality. The difference between the models in the Brodmann are in terms of scale and grandeur. However they all have the ability to render the performance into the original "sound spaces" they were recorded in. They are not laser precision devices that shoot the sound into one tiny sweetspot. Instead each instrument reproduces their own characteristic sound and simultaneously all instruments meld together into a very lifelike rendition of real music.

Musicians especially "get" the Brodmann sound. On numerous occasions in the recording studio where our Brodmann speakers are set up for playback of the captured performance, the various bands and solo artists come and sit down to hear themselves. They are not hifi people per se, most being unfamiliar with the world of high end playback and being blessed with the gift of making music for the rest of us to enjoy.

These musicians and artists continually surprise us with highly complimentary comments on how "real" the Brodmann's sound. True to life.

I guess its one of the reasons Brodmann are used in large concert halls in Vienna to provide a seamless sound in traditional music spaces which have modern needs to fill the space sonically but also discretely without imparting their own character onto acoustic instruments.

Kaiser Acoustics: Kawero Classic

The Kawero! Classic is a speaker custom-tailored to your needs. You can select from a great variety of veneers or colours and also have the acoustic fine-tuning tailored to your individual needs. There are three custom woofers to choose from, so depending on the reverberation time of your listening room (and your listening preferences) Kaiser will select a matching woofer, tune the port frequencies and the midrange passive radiator to optimise the sound.

Kaiser's history, skills, experience, and knowledge bring to the market a speaker of outstanding performance.

Kaiser's expertise in room acoustics and the human hearing mechanism, suggested it was essential to harmonise the direct sound field (first wave front) with the ambient sound field (acoustic power response).

The drawback with most cone drivers is the baffle step (a rise in frequency response due to beaming of the cone) which usually is equalised. If that is done, a certain amount of acoustic energy is missing. The Kawero! speaker restores this missing energy by using a rear firing woofer and midrange passive radiator.

The speakers upper frequency resolution is delivered by a custom Raal 7020XR double-ribbon tweeter. With 14 sq. cm of area, this tweeter has an incredible extension and delivery.

Danish speaker manufacturer Audiotechnology provide the midrange and rear firing woofer with proprietary customised characteristics.

Duelund CAST inductors capacitors and Mundorf silver/gold/oil capacitors, in a time, phase and resonance-optimised characteristics 3D computer designed cabinet, made from an incredibly rigid, tough and well-damped type of beech ply called tankwood.

All produced in-house using state-of-the-art CNC machines, and assembled to the finest tolerances achievable today

German Physiks: Borderland MKIV

2-way Omni-directional Speaker with 12" woofer

German Physiks Borderlands Mk IV Omni-directional stereo speaker system. Employing patented carbon fiber omni-directional full-range driver, the Dicks Dipole Driver (henceforth “DDD) is coupled to a downward-firing 12-inch bass driver and housed in a unique Octagonal cabinet.

The DDD has a frequency response from 70 to 24kHz for up to a medium power of 50 watts continuous. The DDD driver in the Borderland is operated in a quasi full-range mode from 190 to 24kHz). The wide frequency response capability of the DDD driver is a very important feature.

The carbon DDD Drivers sit atop the beveled top edge Octagonal Cabinet and are secured to the cabinet by six high-tensile stainless steel screws. The construction is elegant and rigid and the box is damped with Hawaphon(TM) mats internally to remove any panel resonances.

The speaker is bi-wireable and a treble control on the back of the cabinet provides boost and cut. The settings are -2dB, Flat, +2dB, +4dB. Impedance is 3.7 Ohms at 375Hz. The crossover point is at 190Hz. The lack of crossover in the mid band or treble is readily apparent when listening.

The speakers un-crate with ease, and are up and running within minutes.

The first thing that one notices is how clear and spacious the sound is. Like IMAX for audio!

From the lowest bass (around 28 Hz) on up, the sound was is so open and transparent. The lack of a box around the carbon fiber DDD driver allows for pure coherent sonics. If you have never heard a driver of this level of competency play in free air, no box surrounding it, you may not know how uncolored sound reproduction can be. The mid band is simply stunning. The images are just so vivid.

The ability of the Borderland to reveal inner detail is staggering. The silence within the soundstage is blacker than black. Instrumental details, particularly those examples related to exposing texture and timbre are really special.

Is it musical? Yes thanks to the lightning quick transient response from top to bottom.

Silence between and around the instrumental images are simply stunning. If you love sound staging and sonic holograms then this is about as good as it gets. The imaging and staging sound great in a very broad "sweet spot". No more "head in a vice" presentation.

The Borderlands dynamic response especially the micro dynamics are nothing short of magic. The larger scale orchestral sweeps resolve with outstanding power and control allowing for shades and gradients that are obscured in lesser designs. Mid bass integration to the mid range? There is ZERO bloat into the lower mid range. This is a defining character of the Borderland. It allows you to hear what the instrument should sound like.

Stellar top-to-bottom coherency, speed and dynamics make for a solid foundation upon which the bass with its power, speed and pitch make it a bass-freaks’ master. The rest of the spectrum is just as well rendered with an infinitely open and detailed sound. Use the best possible gear up front, and you may never find any fault with them whatsoever.

Compare these to some of the industry "big dogs" and you will find that this is a keeper!



Kaiser Acoustics: Chiara

2 way AMT Ribbon Dynamic Speaker

The Chiara high performance 2-way stereo loudspeaker features sophisticated engineering, state-of-the-art materials and high tech manufacturing processes to minimize structural vibration, offering uncolored tonal coherence and a robust sound previously unattainable in a compact loudspeaker of this size.

It is the smallest loudspeaker in the Kaiser Kawero speaker range, all manufactured from Panzerholz, a high tech natural wood-based laminate engineered in Germany.

 

Chiara is a two-way design, with an extra rear-mounted ABR (auxiliary bass radiator) – an entirely passive device that behaves rather like a port, while offering rather greater flexibility in tuning and operation. Both these are made by Scan Speak specifically for Kawero!: the flush-mounted 150mm Illuminator-based bass/mid driver on the front has a 95mm paper sandwich diaphragm, while the 180mm ABR (also Illuminator-based) uses a 125mm aluminium alloy cone.

The tweeter is recessed by about a centimetre behind the carbon fibre front panel. It’s a dedicated version of the Mundorf AMT (Air Motion Transformer) drive unit, with a radiating surface that’s approximately 28x60mm. (An AMT is a variation on a ribbon transducer, where the use of a heavily pleated diaphragm considerably enhances the available headroom and power response).

Chiara is made from Panzerholz and is incredibly dense: offers the rigidity of steel, and also boasts some of the best vibration damping characteristics in the world. In fact, as a side-effect of this performance, it turns out that this loudspeaker is bulletproof.

The Chiara is a giant-slayer. Its more compact size belies its performance capability. It is not diminutive in form factor like mini-monitors, but compared to some of the "behemoth" speakers it clearly outperforms - it is certainly much less physically imposing.

The Chiara has some very innovative features that contribute to the performance. The magic of the Chiara lies in its elimination of low level ‘noise’.

Rainer Weber has cleverly designed the speaker to take advantage of what is known as the Fletcher-Munson curve of equal loudness perception. By designing an on-axis response dip (+/- 1dB range) one can change the toe-in of the speaker, and ‘set’ the frequency response in the room at the listening seat for individual preference.

He manages to achieve realism in the finished product by using binaural head microphone systems which closely emulate the human ear and its position within the organic human hearing mechanism when designing.

In a conventional design, dynamic intermodulation back into the driver motors would become a significant factor smearing the time domain, and RFI intermodulation with the complex signal would severely modify the tonal content of the output.

The Chiara drains signal-related ‘real time’ energy down into the stand "labyrinths" from both the drivers and the crossover, and the EMI treatment resolves the signal/RFI intermodulation products as well.

What does the panzerholz do to the sound? If the exact same speaker was made with MDF it would certainly have the same frequency response, but the sound would collapse as energy levels build. The cost of Panzerholz and CNC machining required add considerable to the cost of build but the compromise from using cheap MDF is too great. This technology is so revolutionary that at first its not obvious why it’s there. But It’s the major key to a big sound out of a small speaker (less harshness, more clarity, improved dynamic range). This is really why the speaker has the ability to keep a stable image (phase accuracy), as energy levels increase.

Kaiser are not mass production boxes. One could say the same of Porsche motor cars. Expensive in comparison to cheap sports cars but able to perform better than many super expensive alternatives.

3 way AMT Ribbon Dynamic Speaker

The Kawero!® Vivace has grown out of the development programme for the larger Kawero!® Classic loudspeaker that has drawn numerous 'best sound at
the show' comments in recent years. Both speakers are designed to produce, from a compact cabinet, a huge hall-filling sound with lifelike instruments and voices 'present' in the room.

These speakers work with the room's natural ambient response, together with the characteristics of human hearing, to achieve the correct power, scale and tonal balance in the listening room.

The standard Kawero!® Vivace comes with a colour lacquered cabinet. You can choose from any RAL or NCS colours. Special lacquerings available on demand. The front baffle can be laminated with carbon mesh or wood veneer. High Gloss lacquering is available.

The standard Kawero!® Vivace comes with copper wiring, a crossover made with standard Mundorf components and steel spikes. It is available in standard colours or wood veneers. The surface finish is semi glossy. There is also at extra cost a wide choice of fancy and exotic veneers, almost any paint colour and high gloss or piano lacquer finish.

How do they perform in the real world? Having heard these speakers at length at numerous international audio shows one thing is clear. All exhibitors get given the same compromised hotel rooms or exhibition center booths and have to work in these acoustic "disasters".

Kaiser's somehow manage to shine through these show conditions and captivate the listeners who walk in on the show demonstrations. Consistently rated in the best of show mentions by experienced reviewers the Kaisers are nothing short of magic.

Once installed in home environments where those noise and other acoustic anomalies are not present, then the real magic happens.

If you thought the bass was very good at the show then in the home you will think "where is the subwoofer?". The midband too is simply outstanding. It’s not only neutral and evenhanded, it has excellent coherence and a prodigious dynamic range. You will hear very subtle nuances in vocal phrasing that you may have previously missed on favourite recordings.

These speakers dig deeper into the original recording process. They wont make a bad recording sound good but you will hear substantial differences in recording quality on the source material and this has an ability to increase ones interest in and enthusiasm for re-exploring many of your favourite recordings.

Lansche Audio: Model 5.1

3-Way Speaker with Plasma Tweeter

The Lansche 5.1 is an attractively proportioned 3-way floorstander of modest room friendly footprint. The black-anodized aluminum baffle acts a heatsink for the tweeter's power supply and RF modulator, and conceals the mounting for the woofers and midrange unit. The Plasma tweeter is driven by a 1:20 step-up transformer without additional amplifier needs. The crossover's high-pass filter in the tweeter is first-order.

The No. 5.1 loudspeaker is a three-way system with a bass reflex design. The goal of this model is to bring together sophisticated audio culture with an enclosure designed for living spaces. The CORONA plasma tweeter, which is the loudspeaker's centerpiece, is complemented by a 155-mm midrange driver to cover the middle frequencies. The lower the mass of the driver, the faster and more accurate its response is. The mass being moved by the midrange driver, which features a suspended voice coil, is just 7 grams. This advanced driver design enables a seamless integration of the crucial mid-frequency range with the plasma tweeter. The bass is handled by two 22-cm long-throw drivers. These can achieve a membrane displacement of +/- 1.2 cm. Despite its unobtrusive dimensions, the No. 5.1 can produce a solid bottom end well beyond the usual at-home volume levels.

The meticulously crafted enclosure, featuring sandwiched layers of MDF/ceramics/heavy foam, forms an ideal acoustic basis for the loudspeaker's outstanding audio performance. On the interior, a reinforcement matrix provides interlocking boards to further increase the enclosure's rigidity in all the relevant areas. A high-quality bi-wiring terminal is provided on the back so that the tweeter can be acoustically matched to the room characteristics. With an efficiency rating of 90 dB, the No. 5.1 model is also a very forgiving loudspeaker. Thanks to the terminal panel, the treble range can be matched to individual requirements of any kind.

In 2008 Lansche Audio developed the Corona Plasma Tweeter after many years of building OEM Plasma tweeters that operated from 5Khz and up. The Corona uses a quartz cell 8mm in diameter compared with the earlier version's 4mm cell, which allows it to be used at lower frequencies while maintaining higher-frequency output to 150kHz! The Lansche tweeter can be crossed lower, at 2.5kHz which means it is more useable.

This speaker bats way above its league in every sense. Listeners are constantly amazed at the Plasma Tweeter technology. The most important objective for this design was to produce a model at a new lower price point and do so without compromising the sound quality and musicality that our loudspeakers are famous for. We have achieved this by designing a simpler cabinet and reducing the number of finish options compared to our other models.

Stylishly Simple Design
The Unlimited’s cabinet footprint is only 9.5” x 9.5” (24cm by 24cm), so it takes very little space on the listening room floor. Three levels of finish are available. Tuneful Bass
One of the first things that will strike you about the Unlimiteds is the excellent quality of the bass, especially considering the compact size of the cabinet. The bass is deep with real weight, but it is also clear, articulate and in time with the rest of the audio range. It is easy to follow the bass lines and drums have an authentic impact to their transients. The correct bass balance is maintained even when listening at low levels, so you can continue to enjoy your Unlimiteds when you would otherwise have to use headphones.

Like all German Physiks loudspeakers, the heart of the Unlimited is its carbon fibre DDD driver.  In the Unlimited, this wide-bandwidth omnidirectional driver covers the range from 200Hz up to 24kHz. This extremely wide range is achieved by the use of pistonic, bending wave and modal radiation: most loudspeakers use drivers that are purely pistonic. The same quality of DDD driver is used on all German Physiks loudspeakers, from our entry level Unlimited, to our top of the range, $300,000 Gaudi Mk II.  The DDD driver gives the same very important advantages to all German Physiks designs and is what sets them apart from the competition. These are:

1.  Exceptionally coherent and natural sound:  The extremely wide operating range of the DDD driver provides an exceptionally coherent and natural sound. This is very difficult to achieve when this frequency range is split over two or more different types of driver, which are in physically different positions on the cabinet.

This wide operating range also eliminates the crossover point in the mid-range that loudspeakers using conventional pistonic drivers must have.  Our hearing is most sensitive in the mid-range and avoiding the level and phase errors that crossovers can create from this region further improves transparency. 

2.  Realistic stereo images more like you experience in the concert hall:  When you listen to music in a concert hall, you are in an enveloping sound field where much of the sound is reflected off a surface before it reaches your ears.  These reflections play an important part in the creation the stereo image that you perceive. Because the DDD driver is omnidirectional, it radiates all frequencies evenly around it and so creates a similar enveloping sound field in the listener’s room.  This way the Unlimited is able to recreate a more natural rendition of the original stereo image. This has excellent depth and focus, but without the overly sharp image definition that some hi-fi loudspeakers produce and which you will rarely if ever hear at a live performance.

3.  Stereo imaging enjoyable in almost all positions in the room:  Conventional loudspeakers tend to produce stereo images that can only be best enjoyed from one position in the room, the “sweet-spot”, and then usually by only one person. Move away from the “sweet-spot” and both the stereo image and tonal balance become progressively degraded. This is because conventional pistonic drivers tend to concentrate their radiation into a beam that narrows with increasing frequency.

By contrast, the DDD driver’s omnidirectional radiation pattern enables Unlimited to produce excellent stereo images that can be enjoyed from a wide range of listening positions in the room, whilst also maintaining a more even tonal balance:  much like you would experience at a live performance.  This gives more flexibility in where you sit and allows several people to enjoy a good sound simultaneously, so you can share your music with others.    Because you are not restricted to a small “sweet-spot” in order to hear the best sound, the Unlimited provides a more relaxed listening experience.  This is especially noticeable when you listen for long periods.

4.  Exceptional dynamics: The DDD driver’s very low moving mass provides an excellent impulse response, allowing it to recreate both the attack of the music and resolve low level detail very accurately. The resultant transparency is maintained even on complex high-level passages. For example, cymbals have an authentic initial smash and the ebb and flow of the subtle overtones that follow is clear and unmasked. This ability is essential in order to faithfully reproduce the delicate nuances of a performance and make it sound like music, rather than just good hi-fi. Once you have become accustomed to the more natural presentation provided by our DDD driver, it can be difficult to go back to listening to a conventional design.  This is something we often hear from our customers and it has also been commented on in reviews.

5.  Accurate portrayal of musical instruments’ tonal characteristics:  The DDD driver is phase linear across its operating range, ensuring that the tonal character of each musical instrument is reproduced with great accuracy. This together with the excellent dynamic response enables the Unlimited to reproduce percussion with startling reality.  Voices have a clarity and purity that can be breath taking, with all the elements that comprise the vocal sound correctly located in space and with no undue emphasis. The hardness you often hear with conventional tweeters is eliminated and you get a greater sense of hearing a live musician rather than a recorded one.

Low Resonance Cabinets
Resonances in a loudspeaker cabinet can seriously degrade the sound quality by obscuring detail. To prevent this, the Unlimited’s cabinets are constructed from heavy panels of MDF, with internal re-enforcements fitted at critical points.

As a further anti-resonance measure, a special damping material called Hawaphon® is applied to the inside of each panel. This adds mass to the panel to reduce the resonant frequency and its special internal structure very effectively converts vibration energy into heat. Hawaphon achieves a broadband attenuation of structure-borne sound of more than 50dB: a remarkably high figure. In addition, the special acoustic vinyl material used on the outside of the cabinet provides a further reduction in vibration of up to 17dB.

Finally, to damp resonances of the air within the cabinet, the whole of the inside of the cabinet is lined with a thick layer of high-density felt.

Designed for a Lifetime of Listening Pleasure
We use the same quality of parts in the Unlimited as in our reference products, where we design for a minimum life expectancy of 25 years. For this reason we have selected highly corrosion resistant V4 grade stainless steel for the DDD driver support pillars, terminal mounting plates and all the screws.

We apply the same meticulous care and attention to the manufacture and testing of the Unlimited as we do with all of our other products. After assembly the performance of each loudspeaker is measured. Then it is burnt in for at least 12 hours and measured again. Finally, we carefully match the loudspeakers in each pair.

Unlimited II has a user friendly footprint and a sealed 8" Bass driver cabinet to augment the 170Hz to 24Khz DDD Driver.

The result is an amazing bass performance to match the unparalleled DDD imaging.

The pin-point stereo image is replaced by the sort of flow you get to hear in the concert hall, and the loudspeakers do a fine job of disappearing.

Singers present as a right sized living, breathing and articulate person standing in front of the listener, rather than a disembodied floating head.

German Physiks’ slogan is – “Free yourself from the tyranny of the sweet spot” - you can sit remarkably off axis and still hear a fully stereophonic sound.

That is fairly unique in the world of high end where the "head in a vice" presentation is often the norm.

German Physiks: HRS-130

2-way Omni-directional Speaker with 10" Bass driver

The HRS-130 uses this driver from 240 Hz all the way up to 24,000 Hz, so it is free of the crossover notches that would be present in a standard 3-way loudspeaker.  The woofer has 250mm diameter and a diaphragm made from impregnated paper, with a big, rubber suspension. The driver works in a sealed cabinet, and fires down.

THE HRS-130

The HRS-130 is an improved version of our popular HRS-120. Not only have significant improvements been made to the sound quality, but the cabinet has been restyled to give a smoother look, enabling the HRS-130 to blend more easily in to the room. The improved look is enhanced by a new, luxurious high-polish polyester finish, which is available in black or white.

The HRS-130 uses a single carbon fibre German Physiks DDD driver mounted on top of a slim, floor standing cabinet, with a downward firing woofer set in its base. These work seamlessly together to create a detailed, three-dimensional stereo image that immerses you in the music. The transparency of the DDD driver opens a new window on to your music collection, by helping to reveal fine detail and ambience information that you would normally only expect to hear at a live performance. Improved Resolution and Dynamics
The HRS-130 has a new crossover that provides improved resolution and dynamics. Now it is even easier to follow the various threads in a performance, even at high levels. This does not mean that the HRS-130 forces you to listen analytically, as you can also sit back and enjoy the performance as a whole if you wish.

New 10-inch Bass Driver
The HRS-130 uses a new 10-inch bass driver instead of the 8-inch driver employed by the HRS-120. This is the same unit that our much more expensive PQS-402 uses. It provides a deeper, better defined and more controlled bass. The integration of the bass with the rest of the frequency range has also been improved. Quick and Easy to Set Up
The DDD driver’s omnidirectional radiation pattern and wide operating frequency range make the HRS-130 less critical of its position in the room than conventional loudspeakers, so it is very quick and easy to set up. In addition, because the HRS-130 is omnidirectional, there is no toe-in adjustment to worry about. Last but not least, with a cabinet footprint of only 325mm x 325mm (12.8” x 12.8”), the HRS-130 is easy to fit into even a modest sized room. Don’t let this deceive you though, as the HRS-130 will drive rooms up to 75 square metres (580 sq ft) in size.

Low Resonance Cabinet Design

The panels on this cabinet are smaller and stiffer than those of an equivalent size square section cabinet would be. This reduces cabinet vibration, which would otherwise mask fine detail. Critically placed internal bracing further increases rigidity. In addition, a special damping material called Hawaphon® is applied to the inside of each panel. This very effectively converts vibration energy into heat. It also adds mass to the panel, ensuring that the residual cabinet vibration is extremely low.

High Quality Input Terminals
The HRS-130 is fitted with two sets of WBT’s high quality nextgen™ loudspeaker terminals. This allows the HRS-130 to be bi-wired or bi-amped. High quality jumpers are supplied to enable the HRS-130 to be used with just one set of loudspeaker cables.

Adjustable High Frequency Output
Jumpers on the loudspeaker’s rear panel allow the high frequency output level to be adjusted in 4 steps: -2dB, flat, +2dB and +4dB, enabling the user to easily compensate for the variations in the absorption of high frequencies that can occur due to different types of furnishings and room construction.

Because the look of our products is as important as the sound, all cabinets are built and finished by skilled cabinetmakers for the best possible furniture grade finish.

The HRS-130 strikes a balance between the bigger Borderland MKIV with its 12" bass driver. The 10" bass driver is more relaxed and at ease than the smaller Unlimited II 8" sealed enclosure so creates a more seamless sound.

German Physiks: Carbon MKIV

2-way Omni-directional Speaker with 12" bass driver

The Carbon Mk IV uses a carbon fibre cone DDD driver with an updated crossover and a new carbon fibre reinforced cabinet and achieves a level of resolution and dynamics unrivalled in a system of this size. This together with its hallmark musicality and three dimensional stereo imaging should ensure that the Carbon Mk IV will continue to set the standard in its class.

The Carbon was originally introduced in 1997 and like the Borderland, is another long running German Physiks success story.

Extended Bass with Low Distortion

The Carbon Mk IV uses a single 12 inch woofer of the same type used in our prestige Loreley model. This is coupled with a Helmholtz resonator and produces clean and well controlled bass down to 28Hz from a relatively compact cabinet.

In a conventional design, this range would be covered by two or even three different types of driver and most importantly there would be a cross over point in the mid range, the area where our hearing is most sensitive. The DDD driver’s wide operating range allows this vital region to be kept free from the level and phase anomalies that multiple drivers and a necessarily more complex crossover would create. This enables the Carbon Mk IV, like all German Physiks loudspeakers, to produce very accurate and realistic stereo images.

Another key advantage of the DDD driver is that it is omni directional, so these excellent stereo images can be enjoyed from a wide range of listening positions, unlike conventional designs which have much smaller “sweet spots” due to the tendency of their drivers to beam the sound. The benefits of the Carbon Mk IV can be shared with friends and family.

The DDD driver’s omni directionality also makes the Carbon Mk IV less sensitive to room position than conventional designs. In addition, toe-in adjustment becomes unnecessary and this combined with the loudspeaker’s small foot print, make it relatively easy to set up in the listening room.

The DDD driver’s very low moving mass provides the further benefit of exceptional impulse and phase response characteristics and allows it to reproduce both the attack of the music and resolve low level detail very accurately. This is essential in order to faithfully reproduce the delicate nuances and timbral characteristics of a performance and make it sound like music, rather than just good hi-fi. The driver’s excellent impulse response also ensures that the stereo image remains focussed and stable, even when the loudspeaker is reproducing complex passages at high levels.

Advanced Carbon Fibre Reinforced Cabinet

The Carbon Mk IV’s cabinet is an enhanced version of that used in the Borderland. It uses an octagonal section column constructed from heavy MDF panels with additional internal bracing for increased strength. The octagonal construction means that the individual panels are smaller and therefore stiffer than they would be if a conventional square or rectangular construction was used. The increased stiffness greatly reduces cabinet resonance and the radiation of sound through the panels (cabinet talk), both of which would otherwise degrade the loudspeaker’s performance. The cabinet’s panels are further reinforced with multiple layers of bi-directional, resin impregnated carbon fibre, which are applied using techniques originally developed for the aircraft industry. This produces a cabinet that is immensely rigid and strong. It is also practically free from resonances within the audio frequency band and shows very low levels of cabinet talk. This provides a useful improvement in the loudspeaker’s ability to resolve low level detail. Any residual cabinet talk is minimised by applying a special damping material called Hawaphon to the inside of each panel. Hawaphon is a polymer sheet containing a matrix of small cells filled with very fine steel shot and was originally developed as an anti-surveillance measure for use in military and government buildings. It adds mass to the panel to reduce the resonant frequency and the ability of the shot in each cell to move against each other provides a very effective way of converting vibration energy into heat. Hawaphon achieves a broadband attenuation of structure-borne sound of more than 50dB.

German Physiks: PQS-100

Omni-directional DDD Speaker

The PQS-100 is a compact, full range loudspeaker intended for use in high-end home theatre systems, where its exceptional resolution and dynamics will greatly add to the enjoyment of movies and music videos. Its single carbon fibre cone DDD driver produces detailed and realistic stereo images, which can be enjoyed by many listeners from a wide range of positions within the room. This avoids the “one seat sweet spot” stereo image that most conventional loudspeakers produce.

The PQS-100 is designed to be wall-mounted in order to minimise its intrusion into the room and so save space. This also makes it ideal for use in high-end stereo systems in smaller rooms. In addition, it is well suited for use in galleries, shops and other public places where very high quality sound is required and the sound source must be unobtrusive.

The PQS-100 may be used with the matching PQS-Sub subwoofer. This forms a very compact system with a combined frequency range of 45Hz to 24,000Hz.

Easy Location

The PQS-100 can be quickly and easily attached to the wall with a single screw fitted mount.

A special mounting plate is available to allow the PQS-100 and PQS-Sub to be mounted neatly together on the wall as shown.

Despite its compact size, this system is capable of driving even quite large rooms to high levels, whilst preserving the characteristic German Physiks open and relaxed sound and at the same time producing good levels of well-controlled low bass.

Modern movie soundtracks are very detailed. In many cases not only will there be a large orchestra that on its own covers a very wide frequency and dynamic range, but there will be complex sound effects sections with a large number of elements, as well as several voice tracks. The DDD driver’s exceptional speed and low distortion enable it to clearly resolve all the elements in even the most complex soundtrack and so provide a much more enjoyable and exciting viewing experience.

Low Cabinet Colouration

The PQS-100 solves the problem of cabinet colouration by having to all intents and purposes no cabinet. The top, bottom and back plates are machined from single pieces of solid MDF and are inherently very stiff and non-resonant.

The drivers in a conventional loudspeaker beam the sound, rather than radiating it evenly around the loudspeaker. This beaming effect becomes more pronounced as the frequency increases. Consequently, you generally only obtain the correct tonal balance when seated in a narrow range of positions in the room. German Physiks’ Revolutionary DDD Driver
Like all German Physiks loudspeakers, the key to the exceptional performance delivered by the PQS-202 MK II is its carbon fiber DDD driver. Here, this wide-bandwidth omnidirectional driver covers the range from 250Hz up to 24kHz. This extremely wide range is achieved by the use of pistonic, bending wave and modal radiation: Most loudspeakers use drivers that are purely pistonic. The same DDD driver is used on all German Physiks loudspeakers, from our entry level Unlimited MK II, to our top of the range, $300,000 Gaudi MK II.  The DDD driver gives the same very important advantages to all German Physiks designs and is what sets them apart from the competition. These are:

1. Exceptionally coherent and natural sound: The extremely wide operating range of the DDD driver provides an exceptionally coherent and natural sound. This is very difficult to achieve when this frequency range is split over two or more different types of driver, which are in physically different positions on the cabinet.

This wide operating range also eliminates the crossover point in the mid-range that loudspeakers using conventional pistonic drivers must have. Our hearing is most sensitive in the mid-range and avoiding the level and phase errors that crossovers can create from this region further improves transparency.

2. Realistic stereo images more like the concert hall experience: When you listen to music in a concert hall, you are in an enveloping sound field where much of the sound is reflected off a surface before it reaches your ears. These reflections play an important part in the creation of the stereo image that you perceive. Because the DDD driver is omnidirectional, it radiates all frequencies evenly around it and so creates a similar enveloping sound field in the listener’s room. This way the PQS-202 MK II is able to recreate a more natural rendition of the original stereo image. This has excellent depth and focus, but without the overly sharp image definition that some hi-fi loudspeakers produce and which you will rarely if ever hear at a live performance.

3. Stereo imaging enjoyable in almost all positions in the room: Conventional loudspeakers tend to produce stereo images that can only be best enjoyed from one position in the room, the “sweet-spot,” and then usually by only one person. Move away from the “sweet-spot” and both the stereo image and tonal balance become progressively degraded. This is because conventional pistonic drivers tend to concentrate their radiation into a beam that narrows with increasing frequency.

By contrast, the DDD driver’s omnidirectional radiation pattern enables PQS-202 MK II to produce excellent stereo images that can be enjoyed from a wide range of listening positions in the room, while also maintaining a more even tonal balance — much like you would experience at a live performance. This gives more flexibility in where you sit and allows several people to enjoy a good sound simultaneously, so you can share your music with others. Because you are not restricted to a small “sweet-spot” in order to hear the best sound, the PQS-202 MK II provides a more relaxed listening experience. This is especially noticeable when you listen for long periods.

4. Exceptional dynamics: The DDD driver’s very low moving mass provides an excellent impulse response, allowing it to recreate both the attack of the music and resolve low level detail very accurately. The resultant transparency is maintained even on complex high-level passages. For example, cymbals have an authentic initial smash and the ebb and flow of the subtle overtones that follow is clear and unmasked. This ability is essential in order to faithfully reproduce the delicate nuances of a performance and make it sound like music, rather than just good hi-fi. Once you have become accustomed to the more natural presentation provided by our DDD driver, it can be difficult to go back to listening to a conventional design. This is something we often hear from our customers and it has also been commented on in reviews.

5. Accurate portrayal of musical instruments’ tonal characteristics: The DDD driver is phase linear across its operating range, ensuring that the tonal character of each musical instrument is reproduced with great accuracy. This together with the excellent dynamic response enables the PQS-202 MK II to reproduce percussion with startling reality. Voices have a clarity and purity that can be breath taking, with all the elements that comprise the vocal sound correctly located in space and with no undue emphasis. The hardness you often hear with conventional tweeters is eliminated and you get a greater sense of hearing a live musician rather than a recorded one.

Low Resonance Cabinet
To minimize resonances the PQS-202 MK II’s cabinet is constructed from heavy MDF panels with additional internal bracing to increase rigidity. Any residual resonances are minimized by applying Hawaphon®, a special damping material, to the inside of each panel. Hawaphon® is a polymer sheet containing a matrix of small cells filled with very fine steel shot and was originally developed as an anti-surveillance measure for use in military and government buildings. It adds mass to the panel to reduce the resonant frequency and the ability of the shot in each cell to move against each other provides a very effective way of converting vibration energy into heat. Hawaphon® achieves a broadband attenuation of structure-borne sound of more than 50dB.

To damp resonances of the air within the cabinet, the whole of the inside of the cabinet is lined with a thick layer of high-density felt.

Adjustable High Frequency Output
Jumpers on the loudspeaker’s rear panel enable the high frequency output level to be adjusted in 4 steps: -2dB, Flat, +2dB and +4dB. This allows the user to easily compensate for the variations in the absorption of high frequencies that occur due to different types of furnishings and room construction.

Hand Finished Cabinets for Ultimate Quality
Because the look of our products is as important as the sound, all our cabinets are built and finished by skilled cabinetmakers for the best possible furniture grade finish.

The PQS-202 MK II is available in black or white high-polish polyester; a wide range of high quality veneers in both satin and high gloss lacquer and satin and high gloss automotive paint finishes.

A high gloss carbon fiber finish is also available by special order. Here the cabinet’s heavy MDF panels are reinforced with multiple layers of bi-directional, resin impregnated carbon fibre, applied using techniques originally developed for the aircraft industry. This is then coated with a multi-layer lacquer and hand finished to a luxuriously high lustre. As well as looking extremely attractive, the carbon fiber adds an additional degree of stiffness to the cabinet.

German Physiks: PQS-302

Multi-way Omni-directional DDD Speaker

PQS 302 is designed for normal dedicated listening rooms that are large enough to allow it to provide its best performance.

The Challenge
Our PQS-402 has been consistently popular since it was first introduced in 2006, but we found that a significant number of potential customers did not have listening rooms that were large enough to allow it to provide its best performance. For these customers we have designed the PQS-302.

The PQS-302 should not be regarded as simply a scaled down version of the PQS-402. It is an exceptional loudspeaker in its own right, with realistic and detailed three-dimensional stereo imaging, excellent dynamics and our trademark fast, deep and well-controlled bass. It goes without saying that it also offers the finesse and transparency that all German Physiks loudspeakers are famous for. Even more impressive is that it combines these attributes with an ability to produce output levels up to 112dB for a more realistic recreation of live-music like dynamics.

The resulting superb sound performance is why the leading German high-end audio magazine Stereoplay has been using the PQS-302 as its reference loudspeakers since 2010.

Fast and Extended Bass
The outward appearance of the PQS-302 bass system is similar to that of the PQS-402. Two bass cabinets are mounted one on top of the other and stand between a top and a bottom plate. None of these components is attached to the other using screws or any form of hard connection. Instead they are held together by a system of interlocking collars. This combined with the fact that the two cabinets have different weights, as do the top and bottom plates, means that resonances are reduced to negligible levels compared to a solid structure. In order to obtain a bass response with the required speed and extension we could not simply scale down the PQS-402 design, so we have employed a totally different approach. Each cabinet houses a single 8-inch woofer mounted on one of the forward faces, with a reflex port situated on the other. This provides a bass with the high speed necessary to match the DDD driver, while also producing a well-controlled and balanced response down to 26Hz.

The high sound level capability of the PQS-302 meant that extra care had to be taken with the cabinet design to minimize resonances, as these would otherwise degrade the loudspeaker’s ability to resolve the fine detail that is essential in order to produce a sense of realism and hence convey the emotion that is the essence of a musical performance. Consequently, we have borrowed heavily from the design of the PQS-402.

The PQS-302’s DDD drivers use very small enclosures, minimizing the area of any potential vibrating surface. By being cylindrical, they eliminate the resonances that can arise with a conventional rectangular or square section cabinet. Because they are made from aluminum, a comparatively soft metal, residual vibration of the enclosure is minimized. The DDD driver enclosure end-caps are made from non-resonant MDF and the enclosure is packed with damping material to dissipate any standing waves. The result is that the German Physiks PQS-302 has the clarity that we normally associate with electrostatic loudspeakers and for the same reason: they essentially have no enclosure to color the sound.

For the bass system, which covers the range from 170Hz downwards, we also looked to the PQS-402. The system is divided into two independent cabinets, so the panels are smaller and therefore stiffer and more vibration-resistant than if a single large enclosure had been used. All the cabinet vertical surfaces are non-parallel to prevent the formation of standing waves between them. Internal bracing increases rigidity to suppress resonances. Residual vibration is minimized by applying a special damping material called Hawaphon®, to the inside surface of each panel.

Hawaphon® consists of a polymer sheet containing a matrix of small cells filled with fine steel shot. It adds mass to the panels to reduce the resonant frequency and the ability of the balls in each cell to move against each other provides a very effective way of converting vibration energy into heat. Originally developed as an anti-surveillance measure for use in military and government buildings, Hawaphon® achieves broadband attenuation of structure-borne sound of more than 50dB, which is an exceptionally high figure.

To damp resonances of the air within the cabinet, the whole of the interior is lined with a 1cm thick layer of high-density felt. This is achieved by fitting pieces of felt that are precisely cut to fit each panel, rather than just inserting a roll of felt into the cabinet. This is a time consuming process, but we believe produces a superior result and is typical of the attention to detail that we lavish on all of our products.

Comprehensive Crossover Adjustment
The crossover provides a wide range of adjustment to allow the PQS-302 to be better set up to suit the user’s listening room. The high frequency level may be adjusted over the range -2dB to +4dB in 4 steps and the low frequency level may be adjusted over the range +10dB to 0dB in 3 steps. Both controls are facilitated by high quality jumpers located on the loudspeaker’s rear panel and may be quickly and easily adjusted.

Multi-way Omni-directional DDD Speaker

The design brief for PQS 402 was to reproduce the sound of our Loreley model in a smaller loudspeaker using similar technology and so make our reference performance level products available to a wider audience. The PQS 402 succeeds in this.  It can play prodigiously loud – up to 118dB and it can play very deep – down to 25Hz, whilst all the time retaining the delicacy and transparency that German Physiks loudspeakers are famous for.

The Design Brief
The design brief for the PQS-402 was to produce a listening experience comparable to that of our Loreley model from a loudspeaker with a smaller cabinet, thereby making our reference level products available to a wider audience.  As well as the usual impressive German Physiks attributes, the PQS-402 also boasts a very wide dynamic range that comes close to its larger stable mate. The PQS-402 uses two 10-inch woofers and four 8-inch passive drivers to produce prodigious amounts of deep and well-controlled bass, that at the same time has the speed and finesse to perfectly match with the dual DDD drivers. The combined effect is a loudspeaker that can do equal justice to full-scale orchestral works, or a solo voice.

The Problem
Because we wanted to cross over the DDD driver to the woofer between 220Hz and 140Hz, we had to find a way to build a very fast bass system that could match the speed of the DDD driver in the crossover region and also work down to 25Hz. To reproduce low bass at high levels a lot of air has be moved. This requires either a driver with a large surface area, which will be heavy and therefore not easy to move at the speed necessary to match the DDD driver, or a driver with a long excursion, which again will be heavy due to the rigidity required to withstand the necessary acceleration. Most loudspeaker designers solve this problem by producing a 3-way system. However, in a loudspeaker the size of the PQS-402, a 3-way solution would have been worse than a 2-way solution, due to the difficulty of making 3 drivers appear to be a single source. This is especially difficult with the mid and treble drivers, where the ear’s ability to locate position is very acute. It can be done, by why bother when you have a better solution?

The Solution
Our solution was to build a bass cabinet using a fast and powerful 10-inch driver and two 8inch passive radiators. The 10-inch driver integrates flawlessly with the speed of the DDD drivers and the passive radiators extend the bass response smoothly down to 25Hz as required. The final system comprises 2 bass cabinets that are mounted one on top of the other and stand between a top and a bottom plate. None of these components is attached to the other using screws or any other form of hard connection. Instead they are held together by a system of interlocking collars. This, combined with the fact that the two cabinets have different weights, as do the top and bottom plates, means that resonances are reduced to negligible levels compared to a solid structure. This arrangement is also very difficult to topple, which is a useful safety feature for customers who live in earthquake regions.

This ability is essential in order to faithfully reproduce the delicate nuances of a performance and make it sound like music, rather than just good hi-fi. Once you have become accustomed to the more natural presentation provided by our DDD driver, it can be difficult to go back to listening to a conventional design. This is something we often hear from our customers and it has also been commented on in reviews.

5. Accurate portrayal of musical instruments’ tonal characteristics: The DDD driver is phase linear across its operating range, ensuring that the tonal character of each musical instrument is reproduced with great accuracy. This together with the excellent dynamic response enables the Borderland MK IV to reproduce percussion with startling reality. Voices have a clarity and purity that can be breath taking, with all the elements that comprise the vocal sound correctly located in space and with no undue emphasis. The hardness you often hear with conventional tweeters is eliminated and you get a greater sense of hearing a live musician rather than a recorded one.

Low Resonance Cabinet
Because of the very high sound level capability of the PQS-402 (118dB), we went to great pains to design a cabinet where resonances were minimized, as these would otherwise degrade the loudspeaker’s ability to resolve the fine detail that is essential in order to produce a sense of realism and hence convey the emotion that is the essence of a musical performance.

The PQS-402’s DDD drivers use very small enclosures, minimizing the area of any potential vibrating surface. By being cylindrical, they eliminate the resonances that can arise with a conventional rectangular or square section cabinet. Because they are made from aluminum, a comparatively soft metal, residual vibration of the enclosure is minimized. The DDD driver enclosure end-caps are made from non-resonant MDF and the enclosure is packed with damping material to dissipate any standing waves. The result is that the PQS-402 has the clarity that we normally associate with electrostatic loudspeakers and for the same reason: they essentially have no enclosure to color the sound

The bass system, which covers the range from 215Hz downwards, is divided into two independent cabinets, so the panels are smaller and therefore stiffer and more vibration-resistant than if a single large enclosure had been used. All the cabinet vertical surfaces are non-parallel to prevent the formation of standing waves between them. Internal bracing increases rigidity to suppress resonances. Residual vibration is minimized by applying a special damping material called Hawaphon®, to the inside surface of each panel.

Hawaphon® consists of a polymer sheet containing a matrix of small cells filled with fine steel shot. It adds mass to the panels to reduce the resonant frequency and the ability of the balls in each cell to move against each other provides a very effective way of converting vibration energy into heat. Originally developed as an anti-surveillance measure for use in military and government buildings, Hawaphon® achieves broadband attenuation of structure-borne sound of more than 50dB, which is an exceptionally high figure.

To damp resonances of the air within the cabinet, the whole of the interior is lined with a 1cm thick layer of high-density felt. This is achieved by fitting pieces of felt that are precisely cut to fit each panel, rather than just inserting a roll of felt into the cabinet. This is a time consuming process, but we believe produces a superior result and is typical of the attention to detail that we lavish on all of our products.

Patented Crossover Design
The crossover provides a wide range of adjustment to allow the PQS-402 to be better set up to suit the user’s listening room. The high frequency level may be adjusted over the range -2dB to +4dB in 4 steps and the low frequency level may be adjusted over the range +10dB to 0dB in 3 steps. The low frequency control has no effect above 100Hz and we have applied for two patents to cover the novel approach that we developed to achieve this. Both controls are facilitated by high quality jumpers located on the loudspeaker’s rear panel and may be quickly and easily adjusted.

Biamp Upgrade
The standard configuration for the PQS-402 is a single power amplifier, but a significant improvement in performance may be achieved if the loudspeaker is bi-amped. This is cheaper and a lot less trouble than upgrading to a new loudspeaker system.

Hand Finished Cabinets for Ultimate Quality
Because the look of our products is as important as the sound, all our cabinets are built and finished by skilled cabinetmakers for the best possible furniture grade finish.

The PQS-402 is available in black or white high-polish polyester; a wide range of high quality veneers in both satin and high gloss lacquer and satin and high gloss automotive paint finishes.

A high gloss carbon fiber finish is also available to special order. Here the cabinet’s heavy MDF panels are reinforced with multiple layers of bi-directional, resin impregnated carbon fibre, applied using techniques originally developed for the aircraft industry. This is then coated with a multi-layer lacquer and hand finished to a luxuriously high lustre. As well as looking extremely attractive, the carbon fibre adds an additional degree of stiffness to the cabinet.

Pretty close to the magic of a Loreley.

A statement speaker for sure. If the Borderland gets favourably compared to some of the big name dynamic speakers which are well-known brands then the PQS-402 is in a different league altogether.

If Gaudi is Everest then Emperor is K2, Loreley is Kangchenjunga.

This leaves the PQS-402 as a figurative Mount Lhotse (physically only 332 Meters from the Summit of Everest). A magnificent view in rarefied atmosphere. Some would say incomparable (and we might add within reach!).

THE LORELEY MK III

Independent Bass Enclosures

Each loudspeaker has two large independent bass enclosures. These are mounted one on top of the other and are held together by an interlocking collar arrangement. This greatly reduces resonances and also makes the column very difficult to topple. This is a useful safety feature for customers who live in earthquake regions. Each enclosure is fitted with a 12 inch inverted dome driver which has a maximum excursion of 3 inches. Distortion levels are typically a tenth of those of conventional 18 inch sub woofers at comparable output levels. In addition, their acceleration and transient responses are far superior due to the immense magnetic forces generated by the massive rare earth magnets we use and to the very high stiffness of the dome diaphragms. The net result is a system with a very extended and very clean low frequency response, that is also capable of prodigious output levels, exceeding 110dB at 18Hz.

Freedom from Power Compression

Power compression, the reduction in dynamic range caused by heating of the voice coil, is much reduced over conventional woofer drivers due to the ultra-wide, underhung voice coil and triple magnet structure we employ. Power handling is also correspondingly greatly increased over that of conventional designs.

The DDD Driver

As with all German Physiks loudspeakers, the heart of the Loreley is the DDD driver.  The contribution this makes to the exceptional level of fidelity achieved by this speaker cannot be overstated.  Nor can we overemphasise the important advantages the DDD driver gives the Loreley over speakers using conventional drivers.

The DDD driver’s very low moving mass enables it to operate linearly over an extremely wide frequency range. On the Loreley it covers the entire range from 180Hz upwards  In a conventional design, this range would be covered by two or even three different types of driver and most importantly there would be a cross over point in the mid range, the area where our hearing is most sensitive.  The DDD driver’s wide operating range allows this vital region to be kept free from the level and phase anomalies that multiple drivers and a necessarily more complex cross over would create. This enables the Loreley to produce very accurate and realistic stereo images.

Another key advantage of the DDD driver is that it is omni directional, so these excellent stereo images can be enjoyed from a wide range of listening positions, unlike conventional designs which have much smaller “sweet spots” due to the tendency of their drivers to beam the sound. This allows a more relaxed listening experience as you don’t have to keep worrying about sitting in exactly the right position.

The DDD driver’s very low moving mass provides the further benefit of exceptional impulse and phase response characteristics and allows it to reproduce both the attack of the music and resolve low level detail very accurately.  This is essential in order to faithfully reproduce the delicate nuances and timbral characteristics of a performance and make it sound like music, rather than just good hi-fi.  The driver’s excellent impulse response also ensures that the stereo image remains focussed and stable, even when the loudspeaker is reproducing complex passages at high levels.

Comprehensive Crossover Adjustment

The built in passive crossover provides a wide range of adjustment to allow the Loreley to be optimally set up to suit the user’s listening room.  The high frequency level may be adjusted over the range -2dB to +4dB in 4 steps and the low frequency level may be adjusted over the range +10dB to 0dB in 3 steps.  High quality jumpers on the rear panel make this adjustment quick and easy.

Optional Electronic Crossover

We advise that the Loreley be bi-amped and for the best results it should be used with the German Physiks electronic crossover.  This has been designed specifically for use with our speaker systems.  It is a no-compromise, dual mono design and employs dual mains transformers, rectifiers and capacitor banks.  Audiophile grade Burr Brown and Analog Devices op amps are used exclusively along with special low ESR filter capacitors.  Separate high quality potentiometers are provided for both the high and low pass sections in each channel, and the phase of the subwoofer is continuously adjustable over the range of ±180 degrees.  RCA and XLR connectors are provided for all inputs and outputs.

Hand Finished Cabinets

The Loreley cabinets are finished to the same exacting standard as the Gaudi. They are available in the customer’s choice of select, hand matched hardwood veneers. These are carefully applied to the MDF panels prior to the construction of the cabinets. This method results in some wastage of material and thus adds to the manufacturing cost, but results in the finest possible furniture grade finish. Special Order Version

A special order version of the Loreley is available with a laminated carbon fibre cabinet.  The cabinet’s heavy MDF panels are reinforced with multiple layers of bi-directional, resin impregnated carbon fibre, which are applied using techniques originally developed for the aircraft industry.  The cabinet is coated with a multi-layer lacquer and then hand polished to a high lustre.  This produces a cabinet that is immensely rigid and strong, as well as being practically free from resonances within the audio frequency band. This further increases the already very high level of transparency achieved by the Loreley.  This version of the loudspeaker is fitted with carbon fibre DDD drivers, which extend the frequency response to 24,000Hz and the maximum output level to 120dB.

Top Level Performer

The Loreley should not be looked on as second best to our reference level Gaudi.  Up to quite high listening levels the performance of the Loreley comes close to that of the Gaudi, and in medium size listening rooms, it will more than hold its own against any speaker system at any price.

THE LORELEY MK III

The name Loreley is from a rock on the eastern bank of the Rhine near St. Goarshausen, Germany, which soars some 120 metres above the waterline. It marks the narrowest part of the river between Switzerland and the North Sea, and is the most famous feature of the Rhine Gorge.

Loreley is also the name of a feminine legend, similar to mermaids or Rhine maidens, associated with this rock in popular folklore and in works of music, art and literature.

In 1824, Heinrich Heine adapted a famous poem, Die Lorelei. It describes the eponymous female as a sort of siren who, sitting on the cliff above the Rhine and combing her golden hair, unwittingly distracted shipmen with her beauty and song, causing them to crash on the rocks.

Listening to a Loreley will have you lose time and space and become totally immersed in the musical performance.

German Physiks: PQS-100 Plus

Omni DDD Speaker with Stand

The PQS-100 Plus uses a single carbon fibre DDD driver combined with a downward firing 6-inch woofer in a ported enclosure and is supplied with a set of custom made stands.

The PQS-100 Plus has been designed in response to numerous requests for a lower cost and more compact German Physiks loudspeaker. The challenge was to do this without compromising the speed, transparency and coherence that German Physiks loudspeakers are famous for. This versatile design will give excellent results in both high-end stereo and 5.1 surround systems. When used in 5.1 systems, its excellent bass response obviates the need for a sub-woofer. Its ability to produce detailed and realistic stereo images, which can be enjoyed by many listeners from a wide range of positions within the room, is especially useful in home theatre applications. It is also suitable for centre and rear channel use in multi-channel systems, where larger German Physiks models are being used for the main loudspeakers. In addition, it is well suited for use in galleries, shops and other public places where very high quality sound is required and the sound source must be unobtrusive.

Excellent Driver Integration

A problem with multi-way loudspeakers is how to integrate the drivers so that the listener is not conscious of different parts of the audio range coming from different parts of the loudspeaker. The PQS-100 Plus solves this problem in three ways. Firstly, the DDD driver covers the range from 120Hz to 24,000Hz, so the vast majority of the audio range is covered by just one driver. The DDD driver crosses over to the woofer at 120Hz and the ear’s ability to spatially locate sounds at this frequency is far less acute than it is in the 2,500Hz to 3,000Hz region, where conventional two-way designs cross over. Secondly, the woofer is physically located very close to the DDD driver, which makes the two drivers appear as one source. Thirdly, by making the woofer fire downwards, its radiation pattern more closely matches the omnidirectional pattern of the DDD driver.

The DDD Driver

The DDD driver is used on all German Physiks loudspeakers and the same quality of driver is used on all models from our entry level product, to the top of the range Gaudi. This revolutionary driver gives the same very important advantages to all German Physiks designs and is what sets them apart from our competitors.

Its very low moving mass enables it to operate linearly over an extremely wide frequency range. The carbon fibre DDD driver used on the PQS-100 Plus covers the entire range from 120Hz to 24,000Hz. In a conventional design, this range would be covered by two or even three different types of driver and most importantly there would be a cross over point in the mid-range, the area where our hearing is most sensitive. The DDD driver is omnidirectional, so the excellent stereo images it produces can be enjoyed from a wide range of listening positions in the room. This gives more flexibility in where you position the loudspeaker and where you sit. This is also an ideal property in a loudspeaker intended for use in home theatre systems, where there may be several listeners.

The drivers in a conventional loudspeaker beam the sound, rather than radiating it evenly around the loudspeaker. This beaming effect becomes more pronounced as the frequency increases. Consequently, you generally only obtain the correct tonal balance when seated in a narrow range of positions in the room. By contrast, the DDD driver’s omnidirectional radiation pattern ensures that the tonal balance of the music is much more even throughout the room.

Modern movie soundtracks are very detailed. In many cases not only will there be a large orchestra that on its own covers a very wide frequency and dynamic range, but there will be complex sound effects sections with a large number of elements, as well as several voice tracks. The DDD driver’s exceptional speed and low distortion enable it to clearly resolve all the elements in even the most complex soundtrack and so provide a much more enjoyable and exciting viewing experience.

The DDD driver is phase linear across its operating range, ensuring that the timbral character of each musical instrument is reproduced with great accuracy. This also makes sound effects more believable and is particularly noticeable on complex and very dynamic effects.

Easy Location

The PQS-100 Plus is relatively tolerant of where it is positioned in the room, making it easy to set up. It may be set against the wall, or placed into the room.

Low Cabinet Colouration

The PQS-100 Plus solves the problem of cabinet colouration by having a minimalist cabinet. This is machined from heavy MDF panels, which are inherently very stiff and non-resonant. The cabinet’s rounded shape has been carefully chosen to minimise resonances. The outside of the cabinet is reinforced with a layer of carbon fibre. This provides additional stiffness and therefore resonance suppression. A special damping material called Hawaphon is applied to the inside surfaces of the cabinet. Hawaphon is a polymer sheet containing a matrix of small cells filled with very fine steel shot and was originally developed as an anti-surveillance measure for use in military and government buildings. It adds mass to the cabinet to further reduce the resonant frequency and the ability of the shot in the cells to move against each other provides a very effective way of converting vibration energy into heat. Hawaphon achieves a broadband attenuation of structure-borne sound of more than 50dB: a remarkably high figure. Additional damping is provided by the application of bitumen damping sheets and unwanted air resonances are prevented by the use of high density felt sheet.

The main body of the PQS-100 Plus cabinet is finished in carbon fibre, hand polished to a high gloss. The other parts of the cabinet are finished in black and grey Nextel.

Custom Made Stands

The PQS-100 Plus system includes a set of high quality PQS-Plus stands, which are quick and easy to assemble. They are made from non-resonant MDF and are finished in black and grey Nextel. A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing

The PQS-100 Plus is physically compact, so does not take up a lot of space. This makes it ideal for the smaller room. German Physiks: EMPEROR MKII

The Emperor MK II is a smaller version of the flagship Gaudi MK II and allows music lovers to enjoy Gaudi levels of performance in rooms that would not accommodate its bigger relative. Its massive bass system produces well-controlled and clean bass all the way down to 18Hz, but is agile enough to integrate perfectly with the speed of the DDD drivers. The coherence of the DDD drivers allows the Emperor to generate very detailed and life like stereo images combined with the ability to produce “live music” like dynamics and sound levels (up to 117dB*).

THE EMPEROR MK II

The Emperor MK II is a smaller version of our flagship Gaudi MK II and allows music lovers to enjoy Gaudi levels of performance in rooms that would not accommodate its bigger relative. Although physically smaller than the Gaudi, the Emperor is still a big loudspeaker, with all the advantages that brings. User Adjustable DDD Driver Array
The Emperor uses the same four DDD driver array as the Gaudi. This is mounted on a telescopic arm, which is driven by linear actuators, enabling it to be precisely positioned in relation to listener, making the set-up process quicker and easier.

Powerful Bass System
Like the Gaudi, the Emperor uses four large independent bass enclosures. These are mounted two to either side of the main support and stand between a top and bottom plate. These are held together by an interlocking collar arrangement.  This greatly reduces resonances and also makes the columns more difficult to topple. The enclosures in one column each house a 12-inch sub-woofer and cover the range from 70Hz to 18Hz. The enclosures in the other column each house two 6-inch metal cone drivers and cover the range from 180Hz to 70Hz. The bass they provide has the ideal balance of speed and weight to seamlessly merge with the DDD drivers and also ensure that there is no smearing of the music’s timing or pace.

German Physiks’ Revolutionary DDD Driver
Like all German Physiks loudspeakers, the key to the exceptional performance delivered by the Emperor is our carbon fibre DDD driver.  Here, this wide-bandwidth omnidirectional driver covers the range from 180Hz up to 24kHz. This extremely wide range is achieved by the use of pistonic, bending wave and modal radiation: most loudspeakers use drivers that are purely pistonic. The same DDD driver is used on all German Physiks loudspeakers, from our entry level Unlimited Mk II, to our top of the range, $300,000 Gaudi Mk II.  The DDD driver gives the same very important advantages to all German Physiks designs and is what sets them apart from the competition. These are:

1.  Exceptionally coherent and natural sound:  The extremely wide operating range of the DDD driver provides an exceptionally coherent and natural sound. This is very difficult to achieve when this frequency range is split over two or more different types of driver, which are in physically different positions on the cabinet.

This wide operating range also eliminates the crossover point in the mid-range that loudspeakers using conventional pistonic drivers must have.  Our hearing is most sensitive in the mid-range and avoiding the level and phase errors that crossovers can create from this region further improves transparency.

2.  Realistic stereo images more like you experience in the concert hall: When you listen to music in a concert hall, you are in an enveloping sound field where much of the sound is reflected off a surface before it reaches your ears. These reflections play an important part in the creation the stereo image that you perceive. Because the DDD driver is omnidirectional, it radiates all frequencies evenly around it and so creates a similar enveloping sound field in the listener’s room. This way the Emperor is able to recreate a more natural rendition of the original stereo image. This has excellent depth and focus, but without the overly sharp image definition that some hi-fi loudspeakers produce and which you will rarely if ever hear at a live performance.

3. Stereo imaging enjoyable in almost all positions in the room:  Conventional loudspeakers tend to produce stereo images that can only be best enjoyed from one position in the room, the “sweet-spot”, and then usually by only one person. Move away from the “sweet-spot” and both the stereo image and tonal balance become progressively degraded. This is because conventional pistonic drivers tend to concentrate their radiation into a beam that narrows with increasing frequency.

By contrast, the DDD driver’s omnidirectional radiation pattern enables the Emperor to produce excellent stereo images that can be enjoyed from a wide range of listening positions in the room, whilst also maintaining a more even tonal balance:  much like you would experience at a live performance.  This gives more flexibility in where you sit and allows several people to enjoy a good sound simultaneously, so you can share your music with others.   It also makes the Emperor ideal for the front channels in a high end-home theatre system.

Because you are not restricted to a small “sweet-spot” in order to hear the best sound, the Emperor provides a more relaxed listening experience.  This is especially noticeable when you listen for long periods.

4.  Exceptional dynamics: The DDD driver’s very low moving mass provides an excellent impulse response, allowing it to recreate both the attack of the music and resolve low level detail very accurately. The resultant transparency is maintained even on complex high-level passages. For example, cymbals have an authentic initial smash and the ebb and flow of the subtle overtones that follow is clear and unmasked. This ability is essential in order to faithfully reproduce the delicate nuances of a performance and make it sound like music, rather than just good hi-fi. Once you have become accustomed to the more natural presentation provided by our DDD driver, it can be difficult to go back to listening to a conventional design.  This is something we often hear from our customers and it has also been commented on in reviews.

5.  Accurate portrayal of musical instruments’ tonal characteristics: The DDD driver is phase linear across its operating range, ensuring that the tonal character of each musical instrument is reproduced with great accuracy. High Quality DSP Electronic Crossover
The Emperor is supplied with a high quality DSP based digital crossover as standard.  This allows extremely accurate matching of the loudspeaker’s frequency response to the characteristics of the listening room.  This is especially useful in dealing with problems in the low-end response, which is where the major problems found in most rooms occur.  The main set-up can be achieved using an auto-calibrate mode and then further fine adjustments made by hand if necessary.  This allows the customer to easily re-calibrate the system on their own should they make any changes to their room. The Gaudi represents the state of the art. While all German Physiks loudspeakers are similarly accurate in reproducing the essential sounds of individual instruments due to their common use of the DDD driver, the Gaudi is unique in its ability to convey musical dynamics from the faintest pianissimo to a full orchestral crescendo. A Monument To Musicality
The Gaudi represents our state of the art. While all German Physiks loudspeakers are similarly accurate in reproducing the essential sounds of individual instruments due to their common use of the DDD driver, the Gaudi is unique in its ability to convey musical dynamics from the faintest pianissimo to a full orchestral crescendo. It is capable of reproducing sound levels up to 120dB, while retaining the signature German Physiks finesse and fidelity.  Originally conceived as a custom made one-off for demonstrating our most advanced loudspeaker technologies, the Gaudi proved such a sensation at industry presentations and prompted so many sales inquiries that we decided to make it a regular, albeit limited, production product. The Gaudi is necessarily costly, but offers a level of performance that is simply unavailable elsewhere.

Leading Edge Driver Complement
Each loudspeaker uses four of our unique DDD drivers in a vertical array, augmented by eight 6-inch metal cones for the mid-bass and four 12-inch honeycomb flat cone drivers mounted in stainless steel frames for the sub-woofer columns.

The sub-woofer drivers are custom made and have 6-inch under hung voice coils within two separate magnetic structures. Double spiders are employed to stabilise the diaphragm. Each unit has a continuous power rating exceeding a thousand watts.  The diaphragm is made from a honeycomb laminate of carbon fibre and aluminium, which is extremely rigid, whilst also being very light.  This enables an exceptional transient response, producing a very fast and clean bass.

The DDD driver array is mounted on a telescopic arm, which is driven by linear actuators, enabling it to be precisely positioned in relation to the listener, making the set-up process quicker and easier.

Powerful Bass System
The Gaudi uses four large independent bass enclosures. These are mounted two either side of the main support and stand between a top and bottom plate. These are held together by an interlocking collar arrangement.  This greatly reduces resonances and also makes the columns more difficult to topple. The enclosures in one column each house two 12-inch sub-woofers and cover the range from 70Hz to 15Hz. The enclosures in the other column each house four 6-inch metal cone drivers and cover the range from 180Hz to 70Hz. This system can produce high levels of very low bass, which is clean and well articulated.  Most importantly, it can also keep time with the very high speed of the DDD drivers, ensuring that the entire audio range is heard as a coherent whole, with no sense of smearing of the music’s timing or pace.

Like all German Physiks loudspeakers, the key to the exceptional performance delivered by the Gaudi is our carbon fibre DDD driver.  Here, this wide-bandwidth omnidirectional driver covers the range from 180Hz up to 24kHz. This extremely wide range is achieved by the use of pistonic, bending wave and modal radiation: most loudspeakers use drivers that are purely pistonic. The DDD driver gives the same very important advantages to all German Physiks designs and is what sets them apart from the competition. These are:

1.  Exceptionally coherent and natural sound:  The extremely wide operating range of the DDD driver provides an exceptionally coherent and natural sound. Movable DDD Driver Array Facilitates Easier Set-Up
A common problem with very large loudspeakers is that their heavy weight makes them hard to move and therefore it becomes difficult to find the perfect setting position. The Gaudi can be ordered with 15 ball-type casters fitted in the base plate, allowing it to be easily moved. Each caster consists of a precision-formed nylon ball, set in a steel housing. These are fixed into deep recesses in the base plate, making them invisible once the loudspeaker has been assembled. The heavy weight of the Gaudi – approximately 720kg – ensures that the casters provide a stable platform for the loudspeaker.

Fine-tuning is achieved by adjusting the distance of the DDD drivers from the listening position. This is very easy and does not involve having to move the whole loudspeaker.  The DDD drivers are mounted on an extendable motorised beam, which may be commanded to move back and forth from the comfort of the listening chair using a wireless remote control, which is provided.  As the DDD drivers are producing everything from 24,000Hz down to 180Hz (and in fact slightly beyond these limits as these are the 0dB points), what you are able to do is effectively the same as being able to move the whole loudspeaker back and forth by remote control.  How different positions of the DDD drivers effect the sound are quickly and easily audible.  Besides our Emperor model, no other loudspeaker in the world offers this degree of flexibility.

The wireless remote control supplied does not depend on conventional batteries for its operation. Instead, a miniature electric generator inside the remote control produces electricity every time it is handled and this is stored in an internal rechargeable battery.  This means that the customer less likely to be inconvenienced by the remote control being rendered unusable due to the batteries being flat.

For customers who want the ultimate level of set-up, for an extra fee, an engineer from German Physiks will visit the customer’s home to unpack, assemble and set-up the loudspeakers.*

Low Resonance Cabinet
To realise the full potential of this loudspeaker, considerable effort has been put into creating a highly rigid structure in order to minimise the radiation of sound energy through the cabinet panels. This is one of the principle causes of degradation of a loudspeaker’s ability to resolve fine detail and thereby produce a sense of realism, as it smears and generally confuses the sound.

The Gaudi’s DDD drivers solve this problem by having very small enclosures, minimising the area of any potential vibrating surface.  By being cylindrical, they eliminate the resonances that can arise with a conventional rectangular or square section cabinet. Because they are made from aluminium, a comparatively soft metal, residual vibration of the enclosure is minimised. The DDD driver enclosure end-caps are made from non-resonant MDF and the enclosure is packed with damping material to dissipate any standing waves.  The result is that the German Physiks Gaudi has the clarity that we normally associate with electrostatic loudspeakers and for the same reason:  they essentially have no enclosure to colour the sound.

The bass system covers the range from 180Hz downwards.  This is divided into four independent cabinets, so the panels are smaller and therefore stiffer and more vibration resistant than if a single large enclosure had been used.  All the cabinet vertical surfaces are non-parallel to prevent the formation of standing waves between them.  Internal bracing increases rigidity to suppress resonances.  Residual vibration is minimised by applying a special damping material called Hawaphon®, to the inside surface of each panel

Hawaphon®, consists of a polymer sheet containing a matrix of small cells filled with fine steel shot. It adds mass to the panels to reduce the resonant frequency and the ability of the balls in each cell to move against each other provides a very effective way of converting vibration energy into heat. Originally developed as an anti-surveillance measure for use in military and government buildings, Hawaphon® achieves broadband attenuation of structure-borne sound of more than 50dB, which is an exceptionally high figure.

To damp resonances of the air within the cabinet, the whole of the interior is lined with a 1cm thick layer of high-density felt.  This is achieved by fitting pieces of felt that are precisely cut to fit each panel, rather than just inserting a roll of felt into the cabinet.  This is a time consuming process, but we believe produces a superior result and is typical of the attention to detail that we lavish on all of our products.

Cabinets Veneered Inside for Long Term Stability
Gaudi cabinets supplied in a veneer finish are also veneered on the inside.  This balances any forces created by dimensional changes in the external veneer due variations in humidity, which in turn could otherwise result in the cabinet becoming distorted.

Hand Finished Cabinets for Ultimate Quality
Each set of Gaudis is custom made to the specific requirements of the individual customer and is built to meticulously high standards by skilled cabinet makers.

The Gaudi is available in black or white high-polish polyester; a wide range of high quality veneers in both satin and high gloss lacquer and satin and high gloss automotive paint finishes.

A high gloss carbon fibre finish is also available to special order. Here the cabinet’s heavy MDF panels are reinforced with multiple layers of bi-directional, resin impregnated carbon fibre, applied using techniques originally developed for the aircraft industry. This is then coated with a multi-layer lacquer and hand finished to a luxuriously high lustre. As well as looking extremely attractive, the carbon fibre adds an additional degree of stiffness to the cabinet.

The goal of this design was to create a benchmark two-way loudspeaker with compact dimensions and an elegant appearance that is easy to integrate into any living or listening space. The main challenge was to develop a driver for the midrange and bass frequencies that is seamlessly matched to the superior speed and resolution of the plasma tweeter. This 20-cm driver design combines a very fast midrange response with a beautifully low bottom end and is complemented by a 22cm long excursion, which is integrated in a down-firing arrangement

The enclosure is based on a combination of MDF, low-vibration ceramics, and absorbent heavy foam. On the interior, a reinforcement matrix provides interlocking boards to further increase the enclosure's rigidity. The base plate is a one-centimeter-thick aluminum slab that also holds the floor spikes. The loudspeaker cabinet is thus completely decoupled from the floor. The angled inclination of the narrow baffle is an effective solution for time-correcting the impulse responses from the two transducer systems. "The proprietary CORONA plasma tweeter, available only from us, forms the centerpiece of our loudspeaker systems.
Every one of our speaker models features this exceptional tweeter, which is largely responsible for our excellent reputation among professional sound studios and high-end audiophiles alike. You, too, can enjoy the near-magical precision and clarity of this tweeter.
This system contains no inductive voice coil, no inhomogeneous magnetic field, no resonance-bound membrane, no mass-spring system vibrating back and forth, and no non-linear suspension. All there is, in fact, is light and air.

The fascination of the CORONA plasma tweeter lies in the hard-to-describe lightness of treble reproduction, linked with an absolutely insane precision and speed, without having to accept even a hint of hardness. The absence of any system-generated resonance in the whole transferred frequency range of 1.5kHz – 150kHz is remarkable! No other system is capable of achieving this, regardless of the principle used. The Plasma tweeter’s mode of operation is responsible for this in that the sound is not sent out via a membrane consisting of a fixed material, but rather by the sound-transferring medium; the air itself. An 8 mm long arc is set up between an extremely small curved annulus in the middle of the combustion chamber and a high voltage outer electrode placed outside the tweeter’s combustion chamber. This arc forms an ionized gas cloud (ion field) which has five times less area and 100,000-times less weight (some weigh as little as atoms)than a fixed membrane. And, of course, the weight of the driver (moving coil) of the membrane should be counted as well because the two form one moving part.)

The music signal itself is modulated and causes all points within the volume of the ion field to be accelerated exactly in unison by changes in the electric field strength. Annoying independent movements which characterize flat ring membrane speakers are plagued by their weight, small band systems or other representatives of the tweeter "old-school", do not occur using this principle. As a result of almost drag free (only the weight of the air) and virtually point-source emission, neither intensity loss nor directional sound can occur in the listening area through interference. The sound itself is generated in the small ionized airspace by the direct stimulation of the air molecules and spreads out from there serving to increase acoustic adaptation and raising efficiency. All treble signals are processed within the exactness of the ear faithfully and coherently. Errors in the amplitudes and phases do not exist. Unwanted noises are above the range of the best amplifiers and well above the available sources of noise. The CORONA plasma tweeter has a positive effect on the whole sound picture.

Every instrument, thus even, for example, a double bass generates higher frequencies from scratching or striking noises which fall within the range of the Plasma tweeter. Furthermore an exact reproduction of the relationship contained in the ratio of direct sound to indirect sound can be made due to the group term (relation of phase difference to frequency segment difference) which is extremely low and is constant across the frequency spectrum. This is a basic condition for an exact 3-D sound. Thus the CORONA Plasma tweeter stands apart in all sorts of ways from ordinary converter processes. With this tweeter we offer the quickest and best treble system in the world by far. For the mid and bass reproduction alone, where a lot of mass has to be moved, there has been an immense engineering cost to achieve a matching sound reproduction without a time delay between the nearly massless high tone reproduction and the mass burdened reproduction of the rest of the sound spectrum.

Of course, a similar speed is impossible to reach with a mid range speaker or woofer. The speed of the moving air molecules (and therefore also of the driven membrane) is proportional to the frequency, it takes 100 times less speed to exactly reproduce 100Hz than it does 10kHz. Even so, for a speaker with self weight this still poses an immense challenge. This problem does not arise in a loudspeaker with a conventional tweeter. Through more sluggish and hence slower transmission of the treble, matching is relatively easy for similarly sluggish action in the mid frequencies, and, more specifically in the bass region.

The design of a loudspeaker's frequency crossover reveals much about its overall quality. Essentially, the simpler the crossover design, the better the speaker will sound. This is made possible through a faultless driver design; the higher the quality of the driver, the simpler the frequency crossover can be. Naturally, the special components used in our crossovers are all hand-picked.

Every nonlinear component means unwanted distortion. The filters we apply thus adhere to our “lean” philosophy to use as few nonlinear components as possible, with the ones we do use being of highest sound reproduction quality. This intention is only achieved in practice if the loudspeaker chassis to be utilized do not present any flaws that need to be corrected.

Lansche speaker enclosures are entirely hand-crafted, built with much love and care. They are designed to provide the best sound characteristics possible. Thanks to computer-calculated resonance damping, our enclosures do not pick up any resonances but remain virtually neutral in terms of acoustic response. A meticulously crafted enclosure is the basis for our loudspeakers' outstanding audio performance. The enclosure walls are based on a multi-layered sandwich design. A combination of materials such as MDF and rigid low-resonance ceramics is bonded together with a 20-mm heavy foam sound absorption mat. As a result, the amplifier output can be channeled to the listener's ears as directly as possible.

Their design concept avoids the age-old sound transmission problem whereby the enclosure stores part of the amplifier's signal energy and slowly radiates it off its surfaces – creating phasing issues and causing undesirable low resonances. Our enclosures furthermore feature an advanced interior matrix that contributes to their superb rigidity. This matrix is designed as a grid of interlocking MDF boards, laid out in multiple layers and perpendicular to each other. They are tongued and glued into the enclosure's exterior walls to form a tight bond."

The No. 7.0 loudspeaker is a D'Appolito group of drivers, surrounding a CORONA plasma tweeter with two midrange drivers and four bass woofers.

The most distinctive feature of the No. 7.0 loudspeaker is the D'Appolito group of drivers, surrounding the CORONA plasma tweeter with two midrange drivers and four bass woofers. The two midrange drivers perfectly cover the frequency range of the human voice, from 150 to 2,000 Hz. Thanks to an optimal membrane geometry, they reproduce high frequencies very homogeneously, even when angled. Four long-throw bass drivers surround the tweeter and midrange set with a pair on each side, ensuring a homogeneous distribution of the sound energy through the listening space.

The frequency crossovers employed are similarly elaborate. Evidencing their state-of-the-art design are individual dedicated crossovers for the treble, midrange and bass frequencies; the exclusive use of highest-quality capacitors; and an absolute minimum of crosstalk between the coils thanks to their physical layout in the enclosure. The enclosure itself is based on a combination of MDF, low-vibration ceramics, and absorbent heavy foam. On the interior, a reinforcement matrix provides interlocking boards to further increase the enclosure's rigidity in all the relevant areas.
